How to Pass your Full Bike Licence

Passing a motorcycle test is simple & straightforward with the correct training & the right advice

ART have been teaching people how to ride motorcycles & scooters safely & pass their full motorbike tests since 1996, so you really can rest assured that you are in safe, professional, experienced hands.  We provide absolutely everything you will require, from professional tuition, the use of full safety kit* head to toe (subject to size), new bikes, fuel, test fees and 12,000 sq. ft of tarmac seven days a week. Some schools think that taking you to a petrol station every day & asking you to pay is acceptable, we disagree, when we say fully inclusive, we mean it!

You will need your UK driving licence, a desire to learn, your wallet only for lunch, oh and a sense of humour always helps.  Please come and visit us and have a good look at what we offer before spending any money. You will find we are a friendly bunch who have a real passion for bikes.

*Safety kit: We supply - Helmets XXS - XXL only  - Jackets/Trousers/Gloves XS to XXXL only. Boots size 5 - 12 only. Anything outside of this range & you will have to supply your own kit, sorry.

One of the most common question we get asked is: how long is it going to take me? For a definitive answer on this, we would definitely need to see you ride first!!
The D.V.S.A. recommends a minimum of 45 hours of lessons with at least 20 hours in-between to practise, in a car. Motorcycles will be different but not that different. This is why we always advise as much time/as many miles as you are able on a 125cc before taking a full licence course on a bigger bike!

One to One motorcycle lessons

If you have never ridden a manual bike before (clutch & gears) our 90 minute One to One New Rider Course will give you the skills and confidence to move onto taking your CBT with ease, you will receive personal tuition in the safety of our secure, off road training area. You will learn how to pull away & stop smoothly before moving onto changing gears and then slow control techniques to include figure of eights and U-Turns.

We also use these lessons for regular refresher courses to help spread the cost of your full licence or as a quick return to rider before buying your new motorcycle or scooter
Maybe you would just like some time on a bike as a quick reminder of how much fun it is!

CBT (Compulsory Basic Training)

CBT is not a test, It is a 5 part modular training course run over the duration of one day, designed for riders to show a competent and safe level of riding on the public road before being issued with a CBT Certificate (DL196), which will last you two years from the date of issue. You do not need to take your motorcycle theory test before completing a CBT, but if you have never been on the road before then it is strongly recommended that you practise one.

Here at ART all of our CBT courses are a maximum of 2 riders with 1 instructor for the WHOLE day, not just the road ride.  You will find "cheaper" but there will be larger groups of 3 or 4 riders with 1 instructor for the whole morning (the off road session) always ask before booking. Its only the road ride (element E) that is the legal maximum of 2:1.  Everyone must complete a CBT course to ride as a learner on L-Plates or before going on to take a full licence course.

Motorcycle theory test

Before you can take any full motorcycle licence or scooter test, you will have to take and pass the theory test for motorcycles (includes the hazard perception test), this will still apply even if you have full entitlements of other categories (Car, H.G.V etc). You have to to answer 43 out of 50 multiple choice questions correctly. The minimum pass mark for the video hazard perception part of the theory test is 44 out of 75.

You do NOT need to complete a theory test before taking a C.B.T, but it is a good idea to get it taken as soon as possible, if you want to take any full motorcycle test. For official D.V.S.A theory test free practice see here.

Motorcycle Theory Test

Full motorcycle licence

At present to ride any motorbike in the UK without L-Plates, ride on motorways and carry passengers, you will first need to complete a CBT course, pass the motorcycle theory test and then have to take and pass the full motorcycle test. The final part is conducted at a Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (D.V.S.A.) test centre and consists of two parts, Module 1 and Module 2.

Our full motorcycle licence courses are available throughout the year from our school in Rowfant, with all training starting seven days a week in our 12,000 sq. ft. off road practice area. However, D.V.S.A. motorcycle tests are not available on weekends or bank holidays in the UK. This will mean your test will always have to take place on a working weekday. We will always try to tailor our courses to your schedule, however during busy times of the year our hands are tied by the availability (lack of) and the time and date of the D.V.S.A. test itself.

Wherever you live, best advice from us is to visit your local school before you spend any money, as standards will range hugely from professional ATB's that take care of everything for you & supply full safety kit, new bikes & premises seven days a week, to those who only rent car parks on a temporary basis. Take some time, do your research, as with everything in life you get what you pay for.

Motorcycle licence upgrades

When you already hold either the full A1 or A2 motorcycle licence in the UK, you can upgrade to the next level without taking a CBT course or a theory test again.  You must wait until at least two years from the date you passed your original bike test. You can upgrade the A1 to the A2 at age 19 and beyond. You can upgrade the A2 to a full at at age 21. If you wish to skip a category & go straight from the A1 to the full A (age 24+ only) you will need to take the theory test again. Most of our licence upgrade courses are generally complete in one day, subject to an assessment of your riding skills and the availability of the D.V.S.A. test

We have two courses available, a Back to Biking course that refreshes the skills that you already have, whilst hopefully learning some new ones or Advanced riding. Advanced riding courses are available for those riders who really want to do the most to maximise their safety, whilst still getting in those smiles to the gallon.

Back to Biking

Back to biking courses are for those full licence holders who would like to top up their existing skills after they have passed their test whether not having ridden for as little as a few months or many years. These return to riding courses are to refresh and evaluate your existing skills and introduce new ones.

The day starts at 8:30am with introductions and discussions on Roadcraft, before an assessment ride till mid morning. After a debrief the next session looks at improvement. The final assessment session looks at your overall ride, including your use or understanding of Roadcraft, finishes at 2:30pm.
